chool may be out for summer, but the learning doesn’t have to take a vacation. For children, this is the perfect time to explore the wonders of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and let their imagination soar.

The “summer slide” phenomenon is a real concern for parents and educators. Research shows that, on average, students experience a significant loss of academic skills over the summer months. STEAM education has gained significant traction in recent years, and for good reason; it provides a holistic approach to learning, encouraging kids to explore multiple disciplines and solve problems creatively. By integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, STEAM nurtures critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration—essential skills for the future.

According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, students can lose up to two and a half months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over summer. Another report by the National Summer Learning Association highlights that children from low-income families lose two to three months of reading skills during the same period. By incorporating STEAM activities into their summer routine, we can keep our children on the path to success.

SCI-PORT DISCOVERY CENTER

As the ultimate STEAM destination, Sci-Port offers an immersive experience for intellectually curious kids. With over 290 hands-on exhibits, including interactive displays on space exploration, engineering marvels, and artistic innovation, Sci-Port also offers camps tailor-made for kids who want to delve deeper into their passions.

VIRTUAL LEARNING

Online platforms have become a treasure trove of educational resources, opening a world of possibilities for sskids during the summer break. Dive into a vast array of websites and apps that offer interactive STEAM lessons, coding challenges, and virtual field trips. Platforms like Khan Academy, Code.org, and Scratch provide comprehensive educational resources that cater to various STEAM disciplines. Your child can explore topics like astronomy, computer programming, engineering, and more at their own pace, all from the comfort of home. These platforms often incorporate gamified elements and interactive activities, making learning fun and engaging.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Don’t forget to take STEAM learning outdoors! Explore local nature trails where your child can observe plants, animals, and ecosystems up close. Take a stroll around the Red River National Wildlife Refuge or go birdwatching at Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park. Encourage them to take notes, sketch their observations, or even create a nature-inspired art project.

Summer is not the time to lose STEAM—it’s the perfect opportunity to fan the flames of your child’s potential. By incorporating fun and educational STEAM activities into their summer routine, you’ll keep their minds sharp, encourage exploration, and nurture their passion for learning.
